What your Miele is telling you

Miele fault codes, in plain English.

The meaning, the safe things to try, and an honest verdict — from twenty years in the field and Miele’s public help pages. Not a substitute for a diagnosis: if in doubt, switch the machine off at the wall and call 0434 000 303.

Washing machines & dryers

F10

Washing machine

The machine is not getting enough water in — usually the tap, the hose or the small filter where the hose meets the tap.

Safe to try yourself

  • —Check the water tap is turned on fully
  • —Check the inlet hose is not kinked or squashed behind the machine
  • —Turn the tap off, unscrew the hose at the tap end and rinse the small mesh filter inside, then reconnect and try again

Often fixable yourself — try the steps first, and book if the code comes back.

F11

Washing machine

The machine cannot pump the water out properly.

Safe to try yourself

  • —Check the drain hose is not kinked, squashed or lifted too high
  • —Clean the drain filter behind the small flap at the bottom front — keep a towel and a shallow tray handy, as trapped water will come out
  • —Restart the programme

Often fixable yourself — try the steps first, and book if it still will not drain.

F20

Washing machine

The machine could not heat the water the way it should.

Safe to try yourself

  • —Switch the machine off at the power point, wait at least two minutes, then switch it back on and restart the programme

Usually needs a technician — a restart is safe to try once, but if the code returns, book it in.

F34

Washing machine

The door could not lock, so the machine will not start the cycle.

Safe to try yourself

  • —Take some laundry out if the drum is very full
  • —Switch off at the power point, wait at least two minutes, then switch back on and try again

Often fixable yourself — try the steps first, but if it keeps happening the door lock usually needs a technician.

F35

Washing machine

The door could not unlock at the end of the cycle.

Safe to try yourself

  • —Switch off at the power point, wait at least two minutes, then switch back on and try opening the door again

Usually needs a technician — do not force the door; if a restart does not release it, book and we can free your laundry safely.

F50

Washing machine

There is a problem with the drive that turns the drum.

Safe to try yourself

  • —Switch the machine off at the power point and back on once to see if the code clears
  • —If it returns, stop running cycles

Usually needs a technician — Miele lists this as a fault you cannot fix yourself.

F53

Washing machine

There is a problem with the drive that turns the drum.

Safe to try yourself

  • —Switch the machine off at the power point and back on once to see if the code clears
  • —If it returns, stop running cycles

Usually needs a technician — Miele lists this as a fault you cannot fix yourself.

F63

Washing machine

The unit that controls where water goes inside the machine has a fault.

Safe to try yourself

  • —Switch the machine off at the power point and back on once to see if the code clears
  • —If it returns, stop running cycles

Usually needs a technician — Miele lists this as a fault you cannot fix yourself.

F138

Washing machine

The machine has found water leaking inside itself and has stopped to protect your home.

Safe to try yourself

  • —Turn off the water tap
  • —Switch the machine off at the power point
  • —Do not run it again

Stop using it and book — leak faults are there to protect your home, so leave the machine off until it is checked.

F220

Washing machine

The machine thinks it is leaking — sometimes a false alarm, sometimes real.

Safe to try yourself

  • —Switch the machine off at the power point
  • —Look carefully for any water on the floor around and under the machine
  • —Only if everything is completely dry, switch back on and run a cycle — if no fault shows, it was a false alarm

If you find any water at all, stop using it and book — if it is bone dry and the code does not return, it was a false alarm.

Waterproof system activated

Washing machine

The machine's built-in leak protection has switched everything off because it found water where it should not be.

Safe to try yourself

  • —Turn off the water tap
  • —Switch the machine off at the power point
  • —Do not run it again

Stop using it and book — this safety system has done its job, so leave the machine off until it is checked.

F50

Heat-pump dryer

The dryer has tripped up — often after the door was opened mid-cycle to add clothes, or because the drum is too full.

Safe to try yourself

  • —Switch the dryer off and straight back on again
  • —Take some laundry out if the drum is very full, then restart

Often fixable yourself — try the steps first, and book if the code keeps coming back.

F53

Heat-pump dryer

There is a problem with the motor that turns the drum or its electronics.

Safe to try yourself

  • —Switch the dryer off at the power point and back on once to see if the code clears
  • —If it returns, stop running cycles

Usually needs a technician — Miele lists this as a fault you cannot fix yourself.

F55

Heat-pump dryer

The clothes still were not dry after three hours, so the dryer stopped the programme.

Safe to try yourself

  • —Dry smaller loads — do not go over the maximum for the programme
  • —Spin the washing at a higher speed before it goes in the dryer
  • —Clean the fluff filters in the door opening

Often fixable yourself — try the steps first, and book if loads still come out damp.

F66

Heat-pump dryer

Air cannot move through the dryer properly — nearly always a build-up of fluff in the filters.

Safe to try yourself

  • —Clean both fluff filters in the door opening, including a wipe with a damp cloth and a rinse under warm water, then dry them before putting them back
  • —Open the flap at the bottom front, pull out the sponge-like plinth filter, rinse it under running water and squeeze it out before refitting
  • —Make sure the room has some airflow and nothing is blocking the vents

Often fixable yourself — a proper filter clean fixes most cases, so book only if the code returns after that.

Clean out airways

Heat-pump dryer

The dryer is telling you its fluff filters are clogged and air cannot get through.

Safe to try yourself

  • —With the dryer switched on, open and close the door to reset the message
  • —Take out and clean both fluff filters in the door opening — wipe, rinse under warm water and dry them before refitting
  • —Use a vacuum cleaner with a thin nozzle to pick up any visible fluff around the air openings

Often fixable yourself — this is routine filter cleaning, so book only if the light stays on after a thorough clean.

Empty out container

Heat-pump dryer

The water container is full, so the dryer has paused until it is emptied.

Safe to try yourself

  • —Switch the dryer off, slide out the water container and empty it
  • —Push the container back in and check it is seated firmly
  • —If the dryer drains through a hose instead, check the hose is not kinked

Almost always fixable yourself — book only if the message keeps appearing with an empty container.

Clean door filter

Heat-pump dryer

The dryer still thinks the filter needs cleaning — usually because it was cleaned while the machine was switched off, so it never registered.

Safe to try yourself

  • —With the dryer switched on, open the door and clean the filter
  • —Close the door and press OK
  • —Then switch the dryer off

Often fixable yourself — doing the clean with the dryer switched on clears the message in most cases.

Dishwashers

F11

Dishwasher

The machine cannot pump its water away, so water is left sitting in the bottom — usually something is blocking the drain filter or drain pump.

Safe to try yourself

  • —Switch the machine off at the power point, then take out the filter combination in the base of the cabinet and rinse it clean under the tap (watch for broken glass)
  • —Refit the filter so it sits flat, switch back on and run the programme again
  • —Check the water has pumped away at the end — if not, stop there

Often fixable yourself — try the filter clean first, but if F11 comes back there is a deeper drain blockage and it needs a technician.

F12

Dishwasher

The machine is not getting enough water in — the tap may be off, the inlet hose kinked, or the small filter where the hose meets the tap blocked.

Safe to try yourself

  • —Check the water tap the dishwasher connects to is turned fully on
  • —Check the inlet hose is not kinked or squashed behind the machine
  • —Switch the machine off, wait a few seconds, switch it back on and restart the programme

Often fixable yourself — try the steps first; if the tap and hose are fine and F12 keeps coming back, book a technician.

F13

Dishwasher

Water is not flowing into the machine properly — the same causes as F12: tap not fully open, a kinked inlet hose, a blocked inlet filter or low water pressure.

Safe to try yourself

  • —Check the water tap is turned fully on
  • —Check the inlet hose is not kinked or trapped
  • —Switch the machine off, wait a few seconds, then switch back on and restart

Often fixable yourself — try the steps first; if it keeps returning the inlet filter or valve likely needs attention from a technician.

F14

Dishwasher

The pump that circulates water around the machine is stuck or not building pressure — common after the dishwasher has sat unused for weeks or months.

Safe to try yourself

  • —Switch the machine off, wait a few seconds, switch it back on and start the programme again
  • —Make sure bowls and cups are loaded upside down so they are not tipping and collecting water
  • —If it clears, run a hot programme to keep the pump moving

Sometimes clears with a restart, but if F14 comes back it points to a pump or sensor problem and usually needs a technician.

F24

Dishwasher

There is a fault with the electrical relay that switches the water heater on and off — Miele class this as a fault you cannot fix yourself.

Safe to try yourself

  • —Switch the machine off at the power point and do not keep running it

Stop using it and book — this is an electrical heating fault and always needs a technician.

F52

Dishwasher

The machine has detected too much foam inside, usually from too much detergent or rinse aid, and has paused the programme to protect itself.

Safe to try yourself

  • —Cancel the programme (turn the selector to Stop/End, or hold Start/Stop for about 5 seconds), then switch the machine off and on again
  • —If you use all-in-one tabs, turn on the Combi tab setting if your model has one
  • —Avoid tabs on short low-temperature programmes and check you are not overdosing detergent or rinse aid

Often fixable yourself — it is nearly always a detergent dosing issue; only book if it keeps happening with correct dosing.

F53

Dishwasher

A sensor that monitors the pump motor speed has failed — Miele class this as a fault you cannot fix yourself.

Safe to try yourself

  • —Switch the machine off and back on once to rule out a one-off glitch — if F53 returns, leave it there

Usually needs a technician — there is nothing useful you can do from the outside.

F70

Dishwasher

The built-in leak protection (Waterproof system) has found water where it should not be, cancelled the programme and started pumping the water out.

Safe to try yourself

  • —Turn off the water tap the dishwasher connects to
  • —Switch the machine off, and unplug it at the wall if you can reach the plug safely
  • —Do not run it again — leave it switched off

Stop using it and book — this is the leak alarm and the machine needs to be checked before it runs again.

Ovens, cooktops & microwaves

F23

Oven

The oven could not reach its self-cleaning temperature, usually because there is too much leftover food soiling inside.

Safe to try yourself

  • —Switch the oven off
  • —Wipe out any loose or heavy food soiling from the oven compartment
  • —Start the pyrolytic cleaning programme again

Often fixable yourself — try the steps first, and book if it comes back.

F32

Oven

The door could not lock for self-cleaning, often because something is caught around the door or the door seal.

Safe to try yourself

  • —Check nothing is trapped in the door seal area and remove it
  • —Switch the oven off
  • —Start the pyrolytic cleaning programme again

Often fixable yourself — try the steps first, and book if it comes back.

F33

Oven

The door lock will not release after self-cleaning, so the door stays locked.

Safe to try yourself

  • —Switch the oven off to cancel the cleaning programme
  • —Give the oven time to cool down and try the door again

Usually needs a technician if the door stays locked after switching off.

F44

Oven

A general technical fault that can sometimes be cleared with a short power reset.

Safe to try yourself

  • —Switch the oven off at the power point or circuit breaker for about 20 seconds
  • —Switch it back on and try again

Often fixable yourself — try the reset first, and book if the fault returns.

F54

Oven

The food probe (the plug-in meat thermometer) is faulty, not the oven itself.

Safe to try yourself

  • —Unplug the food probe from its socket inside the oven — the message disappears once it is removed

Often fixable yourself — the oven works without the probe, and a replacement probe comes from Miele.

F55

Oven

The oven turned itself off as a safety measure because it had been running for an unusually long time.

Safe to try yourself

  • —Switch the oven off and then back on again
  • —Start a new cooking programme

Often fixable yourself — try the steps first.

F60

Oven

The oven is not getting enough cooling air, usually because its air vent is covered or blocked.

Safe to try yourself

  • —Check that the oven's air vent is not covered or blocked
  • —Switch the oven off at the power point or circuit breaker, then back on

Often fixable yourself — try the steps first, but book if it keeps appearing.

F

Induction cooktop

One of the touch controls has been covered for more than about ten seconds — by a finger, a spill or an object — so the cooktop has switched itself off.

Safe to try yourself

  • —Clean the control area and remove anything sitting on it
  • —Once the F goes out, switch the cooktop back on with the On/Off control

Often fixable yourself — try the steps first.

FE44

Induction cooktop

The cooktop has overheated, often because of an empty or unsuitable pan, or a blocked cooling fan underneath.

Safe to try yourself

  • —Let the cooktop cool down completely
  • —Check your pans are induction-suitable — if a magnet sticks to the base, the pan is generally fine
  • —Check the drawer or space under the cooktop for items or dust blocking the fan, and clear it

Often fixable yourself — try the steps first, and book if it comes back.

FE47

Induction cooktop

The cooling fan is blocked, or the cooktop is not getting enough ventilation from underneath.

Safe to try yourself

  • —Clear any items or dust from the drawer or space below the cooktop
  • —Once cleared, switch the cooktop off at the circuit breaker for a minute to clear the message

Often fixable yourself — try the steps first, and book if it comes back.

E2

Induction cooktop

The overheating protection has stepped in — usually caused by an empty pan, oil heated on a high setting, or blocked airflow under the cooktop.

Safe to try yourself

  • —Take the pan off and let the cooktop cool down
  • —Avoid heating empty pans or oil on the highest setting
  • —Check nothing under the cooktop is blocking its ventilation

Often fixable yourself — try the steps first, but book if it keeps triggering.

Err 039 / 040 / 408 / 412

Cooktop

The cooktop's electronics have developed a fault.

Safe to try yourself

  • —Switch the cooktop off at the circuit breaker for about one minute, then back on

Usually needs a technician if the power reset does not clear it.

Err 044

Cooktop

The overheating protection has been triggered, often by an empty pan, oil on a high setting, or poor ventilation underneath.

Safe to try yourself

  • —Let the cooktop cool down completely
  • —Remove the cause — empty pan, oil on high heat, or anything blocking airflow under the cooktop
  • —Try the cooktop again

Often fixable yourself — try the steps first, and book if it comes back.

Err 047 / 048 / 049

Cooktop

The cooling fan is blocked or has failed.

Safe to try yourself

  • —Check nothing in the drawer or space below the cooktop is blocking the fan, and remove it

Often fixable yourself if something is blocking the fan — book if the message comes back.

dE

Cooktop

The cooktop is in shop demonstration mode, so the display works but nothing heats up.

Safe to try yourself

  • —Turn demo mode off using the steps in your manual — on most touch models this is a set combination of the number controls, on rotary models a set turn of the front dials

Often fixable yourself — it is a setting, not a fault.

u_

Induction cooktop

The cooktop cannot detect a suitable pan on that zone — the pan is missing, not induction-compatible, or too small.

Safe to try yourself

  • —Place a pan on the zone you switched on
  • —Check the pan is induction-suitable — if a magnet sticks to the base, it should work
  • —Use a pan big enough to fill the zone markings

Often fixable yourself — it is almost always the pan, not the cooktop.

LC

Cooktop

The child safety lock or system lock is switched on, so the cooktop will not respond.

Safe to try yourself

  • —Turn the lock off using the control combination in your manual — on many models you touch the plus and minus controls together until LC goes out

Often fixable yourself — it is a lock setting, not a fault.

F10

Steam oven

The oven cannot draw water from its container — often a loose or missing suction hose, a pump dried out after long storage, or very soft filtered water it cannot detect.

Safe to try yourself

  • —Check the black suction hose inside the water container is fitted correctly and sitting upright
  • —If your home has a water softener or filter system, add a pinch of salt to the water in the container
  • —Try the programme again

Often fixable yourself — try the steps first, and book if it comes back.

F11

Steam oven

Water cannot drain out of the steam system, usually because of limescale build-up inside.

Safe to try yourself

  • —Run the descaling programme as described in your manual
  • —Set the water hardness setting to the highest level so the oven descales more often
  • —On models that have it, switch on the automatic rinse function in settings

Often fixable yourself — try descaling first, and book if the fault stays.

F12

Steam oven

Water is not getting into the oven, usually because the water tap is closed or the water inlet is blocked.

Safe to try yourself

  • —Check the water tap that supplies the oven is turned on fully
  • —Restart the programme
  • —If it keeps happening, switch the oven off and close the water tap

Often fixable yourself — check the tap first, and book a technician or plumber if it keeps happening.

F13

Steam oven

The oven is getting too hot inside because limescale or a partly closed water tap is stopping enough water getting in.

Safe to try yourself

  • —Check the water tap is open fully and start again
  • —If the message returns, follow the descaling steps in your manual — take care, hot steam escapes when the door is opened

Often fixable yourself — try the steps first, and book if you would rather not descale it.

F20

Steam oven

The oven is not heating up as expected — sometimes simply because of a large amount of frozen food, or a water container that is not pushed fully in.

Safe to try yourself

  • —Switch the oven off and back on, then restart the programme
  • —Push the water container in until it connects properly

Often fixable yourself — try the steps first, and book if it comes back.

F27 / E04

Steam oven

The power was interrupted while a programme was running — E04 means it happened during the descaling programme.

Safe to try yourself

  • —Check how far along the food is and enter a new cooking time if needed, then press start to continue
  • —For E04, let the displayed time run out, then switch the oven off and back on

Often fixable yourself — try the steps first.

F94

Combination steam oven

The small floats that measure the water level in the container have stuck, usually after the oven sat unused with water left in the container.

Safe to try yourself

  • —Remove and empty the water container, then rinse it by hand or in the dishwasher
  • —Dry the container and its compartment with a cloth
  • —Never try to remove the lids from the float casings inside the container

Often fixable yourself — a clean, dry container usually clears it.

F196

Combination steam oven

Water could not be pumped out of the oven compartment, usually because the filter in the floor of the compartment is dirty or not seated properly.

Safe to try yourself

  • —Switch the oven off and back on again
  • —Clean the floor filter in the base of the oven compartment so water can drain, and make sure it is inserted correctly
  • —On DGC 7000 models, check the water drain hose behind the plinth is not kinked or looped

Often fixable yourself — try the steps first, and book if it comes back.

H:H

Microwave

Nothing is wrong — the microwave is keeping your food warm for up to 15 minutes after cooking finishes.

Safe to try yourself

  • —Take the food out and the keep-warm function stops

Nothing to fix — this is normal keep-warm behaviour.

MES_

Microwave

The microwave is in shop demonstration mode, so it looks like it works but will not actually heat.

Safe to try yourself

  • —Turn demo mode off in the appliance settings — your manual shows where

Often fixable yourself — it is a setting, not a fault.

door

Microwave

The microwave will not start because the door has not been opened in the last 20 minutes — a protection against running it empty.

Safe to try yourself

  • —Open the door briefly and check there is food inside
  • —Close the door and press start again

Often fixable yourself — it is a safety feature, not a fault.

Blank display

Microwave

A dark display usually means the clock display or the night-time switch-off setting is turned on, not that the microwave has died.

Safe to try yourself

  • —Turn the time-of-day display back on in settings, as described in your manual
  • —Check whether night-time switch-off is active and turn it off if you prefer

Often fixable yourself — check the settings first.

Vacuums

Middle light flashing quickly

Cordless stick vacuum (Triflex)

The motor has overheated, usually because the filters are clogged with dust.

Safe to try yourself

  • —Switch it off and let it cool for about 30 minutes
  • —Empty the dust container, tap the fine dust filter out over a bin and brush off the pre-filter (keep water away from both)
  • —Once cool, restart — cleaning the filters monthly helps stop it happening again

Often fixable yourself — try the steps first, and book a repair if it keeps cutting out after a filter clean.

Middle and top lights flashing quickly

Cordless stick vacuum (Triflex)

Depending on the model, the vacuum either does not recognise its battery or the roller brush has jammed.

Safe to try yourself

  • —Switch it off, open the side cover on the floorhead, lift out the roller brush and clear any tangled hair or threads, then click it back in
  • —Check the battery is a genuine Miele battery and is clicked in properly
  • —Restart on a lower power setting if you are on thick carpet

Often fixable yourself — try the steps first.

Bottom and top lights flashing quickly

Cordless stick vacuum (Triflex)

An internal system fault has occurred inside the vacuum.

Safe to try yourself

  • —Take the battery out, wait 10 seconds, put it back in and put it on charge
  • —Try switching it on again once it has charged

If that reset does not clear it, it usually needs a technician.

Bottom and middle lights flashing quickly

Cordless stick vacuum (Triflex)

The battery has overheated, or the vacuum does not recognise the battery fitted.

Safe to try yourself

  • —Switch it off with the button on the handle and leave it to cool for about 30 minutes
  • —Check the battery is a genuine Miele battery and is seated properly

Stop using it and book if the lights come back after cooling down — an overheating battery is a safety concern.

Top light flashing quickly

Cordless stick vacuum (Triflex)

The vacuum cannot detect its handle, or an internal fault has occurred.

Safe to try yourself

  • —Switch it off, press the release button, lift the handle off and refit it so it clicks into place at both connection points
  • —Take the battery out for 10 seconds, refit it and put it on charge

Often fixable yourself — try the steps first, and book if it stays flashing.

Bottom light flashing quickly

Cordless stick vacuum (Triflex)

The vacuum cannot detect its handle, or an internal fault has occurred.

Safe to try yourself

  • —Switch it off, press the release button, lift the handle off and refit it so it clicks into place at both connection points
  • —Take the battery out for 10 seconds, refit it and put it on charge

Often fixable yourself — try the steps first, and book if it stays flashing.

Light on the handle flashing

Cordless stick vacuum (Triflex)

The battery is flat, or an internal fault has occurred.

Safe to try yourself

  • —Put the vacuum on charge and give it time before trying again
  • —Check the airways for blockages and empty the dust container
  • —Clean the pre-filter and fine dust filter, then wait about 30 minutes before switching it back on

Often fixable yourself — try the steps first.

Right and middle lights flashing quickly (while charging)

Cordless stick vacuum (Triflex)

There is a battery fault, often because it is being charged somewhere too hot or too cold.

Safe to try yourself

  • —Stop charging — unplug the charging lead, or lift the vacuum off its wall bracket
  • —Wait about 5 minutes, then charge again in a room between 10 and 40 degrees

If the fault comes back, stop using it and book — battery faults are not worth risking.

Left and middle lights flashing quickly

Cordless stick vacuum (Triflex)

The vacuum has a temperature fault — it is running too hot or too cold.

Safe to try yourself

  • —Switch it off with the button on the handle
  • —Wait about 30 minutes, then try again at normal room temperature

Often clears itself after cooling down — book if it keeps coming back.
